Britain is a constitutional monarchy which is a form
of government established under a constitutional system which acknowledges
an hereditary or elected monarch as the head of state.
Today, constitutional monarchy is almost always combined with representative
democracy. Though the king or queen may be regarded as the government's
symbolic head, it is the Prime Minister, whose power derives directly
or indirectly from elections, who actually governs the country.
Here in Great Britain our monarchy is hereditary and
is currently represented by HM Queen Elizabeth II. She came to the throne
on the death of her father King George VI in 1952 and was crowned in Westminster
Abbey, London, in the first televised coronation on June 2nd 1953. The
following table gives details of the queen and her immediate family; for

Lesser "Royals" include Princess Alice of Gloucester,
who is the widow of the late Duke of Gloucester, third son of George V
and therefore the Queen's great-aunt and is now aged 103;
Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and the present Duchess, formerly Birgitte
Eva van Deurs from Denmark : they have three children: Alexander, Earl
of Ulster, born in 1974; The Lady Davina Windsor, born in 1977; and The
Lady Rose Windsor, born in 1980;
Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, also a first cousin to the Queen (and also
to Prince Philip as his mother, Princess Marina, was Prince Philip's aunt)
and the Duchess of Kent, formerlyKatherine Worsley - they have three children
: George, Earl of St Andrews, born in June 1962; Lady Helen Taylor, born
in April 1964 and Lord Nicholas Windsor, born on 25 July 1970.
Prince Michael of Kent is the younger brother of the Duke of Kent and
so also cousin to both the Queen and Prince Philip. He is married to Baroness
Marie-Christine von Reibnitz and they have two children: Frederick, born
in 1979 and Gabriella, born in 1981.
Princess Alexandra, sister to the Duke and Prince Michael of Kent and
another of the Queen's cousins. She is married to Angus Ogilvy, second
son of the Earl of Airlie (now Sir Angus Ogilvy) and they have two children:
James Ogilvy, born in 1964, and Marina Ogilvy, born in 1966.
